Would you believe me if I told you that there exists an Android smartphone that costs only £2.50. Of course not! Well, I can’t blame you because I won’t believe myself either. But a smartphone manufacturer in India, named Ringing Bells, plans to release an Android Smartphone that will only cost buyers two British pounds and fifty cents. That’s way less than the cost of a McDonald’s Happy Meal. Ringing Bells, which was founded last year, claims to be the fastest rising Indian Android smartphone manufacturer launched the Freedom 251 Android smartphone today. If this phone will not be a lemon and support android rooting, it will definitely change the scenario of the Indian Smartphone market.
The Freedom 251 is no pushover phone on paper. Although it has a mediocre 4 inch screen, this phone has a quad core processor, 1 GB RAM (Random Access Memory), and an 8GB internal storage which is paired with a 3.2MP rear camera and a 0.3MP front facing camera. Its storage can also be expanded to 32GB using an SD card. It is not stated which company provides the chipset for this phone but I’m pretty sure it is not from Qualcomm. It will be utilizing Android 5.1 Lollipop and preinstalled with Facebook, Whatsapp, and Youtube apps. These specs may not be top-tier but in the US a phone with these specs could set you back at least $80. If Ringing Bells would support android rooting for the Freedom 251 then power users can maximize the potential of this phone to the fullest.
No company has ever pulled this kind of stunt and I am not sure if Ringing Bell only does this for publicity. I pretty sure they would not be pulling a big profit per unit sold for this phone. Nobody knows what their intentions are but they were able to sell quality android smartphones last year at a very low price. Although not as low as the Freedom 251, the company launched one of the cheapest Indian smartphone with 4G LTE capabilities last year.
India is the third largest smartphone market in the world in terms of units sold and bought. It could also overtake the United States within a year or two that is why a lot of the long term plans of smartphone manufacturers focus on India. Their market is not yet saturated and still has lots of room for growth.
